Film of Dr. Dudley Morton 1931 African Expedition
Authored by Dr. Burton S. Schuler, Google+
For almost forty years I have been studying the work and life of Dr. Dudley J. Morton, The only pictures I have of him were the ones given to me by his grandchildren. So it came to me as a great surprise that a movie exists of Dr. Morton.
In his lifelong on going commentment for better foot care in 1931 Dr. Morton went to the Belgian Congo to study the way three different tribes walk. The tribes were the Ounyabonga, Wafaleru and Wambuti. Morton made a 13 minute film to help document his trip. The film was silent but had slides for narration
During the movie you see Morton doing foot studies on the tribes men by measuring their feet on inked paper. This is a technique that I still use today. The film also shows you scences of local men dancing, various pigmys, women fixing their hair, people cooking , the Upper Congo River,, an riverboat, children playing, cattle on beach, roads being build , street being cleaned and porters being paid three cents a day for their job
He published the results of his study in the October 1st 1932 Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, (14: 741, 1932) in a study titled; “ The Angle of Gait: A Study Based Upon Examination of the feet of Central African Natives“,
The 1932 film that he made can be found on The Travel Film Archive website which is a collection of travelogues and educational and industrial films – many of them in color – that show the world the way it was between 1900 and 1970. All of their footage was shot on film (much of it on 35mm) and not tape.
